3 Quotes – Education

It is a thousand times better to have common sense without education than to have education without common sense.

Robert Green Ingersoll, American lawyer

born:  August 11, 1833
died:  July 21, 1899

Much education today is monumentally ineffective. All too often we are giving young people cut flowers when we should be teaching them to grow their own plants.

John W. Gardner, American educator
born:  October 8, 1912
died:  February 16, 2002

I believe that education is all about being excited about something. Seeing passion and enthusiasm helps push an educational message.

    • Hi Vashti! Thank you very much for your feedback. I am really glad that you like my quote section. It takes a little time to select the most adequate quotes. 🙂

    • Thank you, Aquileana.
It is a pity that the first quote did not please you.
Thank you for commenting and a very happy weekend! 🙂

  1. I love your quote section. My quote needs education as it presents a view that may be misconstrued at opinionated. But here it is, “If you don’t stand for something, then you’ll fall for anything.”

It’s more of a quote of being informed in our thought process and representing what we believe in with education as our backup.

    • Thank you, Jack.
Your quote is awesome and very true.
Education is more than mere learning, it also comprises a certain degree of curiousity in order to comprehend, the experiences made, the use of one’s common sense, etc.

    • Thank you very much. 🙂
There is a saying: “…you learn for life…”
Perhaps our educational systems got that wrong. What mankind needs to learn is to keep curious (how does this work?), to respect all living things, keep passionate about life, etc.

  2. These are all great. My personal favourite is by WB Yeats: Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.
It sums up exactly how I feel.

    • Thank you very much! I also love this quote by William Butler Yeats. As it is very well known, I chose three other quotes. There may well be a Yeats special, soon.

  3. I think the second one is the most uncomfortable. I certainly see my own kids being spoonfed information in order to pass exams, instead of being encouraged to connect with a subject.

    • It is so sad, yet true. Educational concepts need to be updated. Just yesterday I listened to a speaker – specialised in educational matters – who gave us a horrifying example: At a German university, students asked their professor to get right down to the point i.e. he should tell them what exactly they needed to know for the exam.
Education should be understood as comprehending (for life), not as learning by heart and forgetting all about it.
