Cursed (Yorkshire Ghost Series, #2) by Karen Perkins

My rating:  4  of  5  stars

(by Goodreads)

She’s back. This time no one is safe.

A skeleton is dug up at the crossing of the ways on Hanging Moor, striking dread into the heart of Old Ma Ramsgill – the elderly matriarch of the village of Thruscross. And with good reason. The eighteenth-century witch, Jennet, has been woken.

A spate of killings by a vicious black dog gives credence to her warnings and the community – in particular her family – realise they are in terrible danger.

Drastic measures are needed to contain her, but with the imminent flooding of the valley to create a new reservoir, do they have the ability to stop her and break her curse?

Genre:  Horror

Length:  63 pages

The three men looked over at Steve, then back into the grave. Only the skull and shoulder girdle were visible. As one, they shuddered as a worm pushed its way out of the compacted earth behind the jaw bones, for a moment looking as if the skull had stuck an emaciated tongue out at them.

My Opinion

This short story is based on Karen Perkins’ novel Thores-Cross. It tells you how Old Ma Ramsgill deals with the freshly awakened witch Jennet. In the 18th century, Jennet’s scorn was raised as the other villagers did not approve her affair with a married man. In 1966, her bones are accidentally dug up and – Old Ma Ramsgill calls to action. I cannot tell you more about the story as it is really short and it would spoil the fun of reading it yourself.

With Cursed – A Yorkshire Ghost Story, Karen Perkins presents us with a suspenseful short story. The story is cleverly elaborated, leaves you opportunity to include your own imagination. I had a real good time reading Cursed (Yorkshire Ghost Serie, #2). You can read and enjoy cursed even if you did not (yet) read Thores-Cross. I am looking forward to reading Thores-Cross (A Yorkshire Ghost Series, #1)!
