Ranger Martin And The Zombie Apocalypse (Ranger Martin, #1) by Jack Flacco

Bought this book right on publication. (Kindle format)

(by Goodreads)

Never call them zombies. That was one of the rules. So much for rules, everyone who made up that garbage is either dead or undead. It doesn’t matter anymore. They go by other names—chewers, eaters, maggot bags, the changed. Whatever they’re called, they’re everywhere. And they’re not giving up until every last human becomes a single serving entrée to satiate their uncontrollable appetite.

Enter shotgun-toting Ranger Martin who is determined to end the zombies’ all-you-can-eat buffet. In an abandon military silo on the outskirts of the Nevada/Arizona border, he and his specialized team of assassins plan their assaults. Who’s he kidding? His team consists of three kids in their teens, and a boy barely old enough to wipe his own nose. But when a secret air force base in the Mojave Desert proves there’s more to the change than anyone knew, the temptation is too great. Now Ranger and the others set out on the road to overthrow the center of the infestation—a frantic race that will either destroy the hunger-prone zombies or cost him and his friends their lives.

Genre(s):  Horror, Young Adult, Fiction

The teen flung open the door to the gas station brandishing a silver Colt .45 pointed directly at Ranger’s satisfied smirk.

“Stop, Matty. Look!” The boy extended his index finger to the dead creature lying in a pool of green goo in front of him past the door.

“Who the hell are you?” Matty didn’t flinch. She kept the gun pointed at the stranger.

“Ranger Martin.” He gave her a nod and retracted his weapon.

My Opinion

This story introduces you to Ranger Martin. He is a dedicated one-man-and-a-teen-enemy-force against the zombies – until he meets Matty and her younger brother Jon. They have all had their fair share of trouble and bereavement thanks to the zombies. Ranger, Wildside, Matty, Jon, and Randy have a mission… I cannot tell you more about the story as it would spoil the fun of reading it yourself.

With Ranger Martin And The Zombie Apocalypse, Jack Flacco presents us with a fast-paced zombie adventure. The story is cleverly elaborated, focuses on its protagonists and the question why this situation arose in the first place. Jack Flacco describes his characters’ looks in not too much detail, their personalities are more detailed – you can see them clearly before you. I was drawn in, felt very close to the protagonists and the events. I could easily envision the characters and locations. I had a very good time reading Ranger Martin And The Zombie Apocalypse. I just read it for the second time; the second volume Ranger Martin And The Alien Invasion (the ARC, as it is published on 2014-10-21) directly afterwards.

Ranger Martin And The Zombie Apocalypse is very well written and – you can read my opinion on Ranger Martin And The Alien Invasion as of Friday (2014-10-17).

This is a book to read again.

  2. This sounds amazing and wish I had more time to read the book. I tend to be rather aimless, choosing books out of garage sales and don’t usually buy anyone. It is unfortunate to live on a fixed budget but I am hoping you will have many readers and your book will be a success!

    • You might stumble across this book one day, buy and read it without hesitation. You will certainly not regret it.
Jack is a very gifted writer. That’s why we all should spread the word.

    • I couldn’t agree more, Jackie. My review for Ranger Martin (#2) will be online in a few hours. And yes, Jack is a great guy! 🙂

  3. Thanks so much for reviewing my first book in the Ranger Martin series, Karen! It’s great reading that you had read it twice and recommend others to read it more than once! Thanks again for this, I really appreciate it! 🙂

    • The Ranger Martin stories are entertaining and cleverly elaborated. It is a pleasure reading. Like I did with the Harry Potter series – a new volume is always welcome to reread them all. 😀

  4. This looks like a great book! I’ll have to add it to my to-read list. Just the teaser you shared lets me know I would probably enjoy it, as I like fast-paced writing with a lot of action and dialogue. I look forward to reading the rest of your series this week, Karen!

    • It is a great book, Miranda! The protagonists are pretty busy. I was always glad if they could have a nap – gave me a moment to get a coffee or just breathe. 😉
There are many great books out there. Sometimes you read a book that has a direct impact. This is one of them. If there ever is a zombie emergency – Jack Flacco would be the expert to turn to.
