I do my best to build a strong factual foundation for each of my novels and rely upon my author’s notes to keep my conscience clear.

I do not set specific work hours as some writers do. I generally stay with a chapter until I am satisfied, do very little rewriting, and if a scene is going well, I’ve been known to keep night owl hours.

It usually takes me about three years to research and write one of my historical sagas; this is one reason why I take medieval mystery breaks, for they can be completed in only a year.

  1. I like them all but unfortunately, I have to choose the one that is most near my practice. “I do my best to build a strong factual foundation for each of my novels and rely upon my author’s notes to keep my conscience clear.” My habits are so far from the others.

  2. I like both the 1st and 2nd quotes. I can relate with these. Although I write fantasy and horror I do take my research very seriously so that my work can be grounded. Like Sharon, I don’t have set hours to write either.

    • These are excellent choices, Vashti. Research is highly important for believable stories. Some non-writers consider my lack of fixed writing times as lazy.

      • Oh well, if they only knew how much writing those of us without fixed schedules get done they wouldn’t be talking. Who cares what they think? It’s what you know and what you do that matters. They don’t live with you. 😉
