Plot
(by Goodreads)

Indiana Jones wannabe finds adventure a little tougher than she expected.

It’s 1987. Geologist Sam Harris is a woman in a man’s world – naive and underpaid, but resilient and passionate. Desperate for her first job, she accepts a contract with a dodgy entrepreneur exploring for gold in the remote rainforests of Sierramar.

When she uncovers a clue to a treasure buried deep within the jungle, she is sent on an expedition to find it, but one of her colleagues is plotting to seize the hoard and will kill to get his hands on it.

Will Sam find the treasure or will her first adventure be her last?

If you like gutsy heroines, exotic locations, and complex characters, then you’ll love PJ Skinner’s thrilling novel.

Teaser

…There was no front door. A lopsided doorframe with interesting fungi springing from the holes in the wood was all that remained. It had only one habitable room, the floors in the other room having caved in. Two log stools made up the lavish furnishings of this palace.

There would be no escape from living with Wilson in close proximity. Sam wondered if this was the best accommodation available in the village. Wilson had not treated Don Moises with much respect and she suspected the two things were linked. Worse still, something was missing.

“Where’s the toilet?”

“There is no toilet. Go to the forest or the river. You can wash in the river which runs parallel to the main street over there.”

My Opinion

This book focuses on geologist Sam; in need of a job she accepts an offer that takes her to the rainforests of Sierramar, to an adventure that gets her in some unanticipated situations.

With “Fool’s Gold”, PJ Skinner has created a slowly yet steadily developing adventure around Sam Harris. The story comprises a variety of characters with sufficient depth, drama, surprising turns which are solved as the story continues, and interesting geological/archaeological passages. I had a good time reading “Fool’s Gold” – it is the beginning of a promising series. I was drawn into the story having finished the first chapter, already getting closer to Sam.

This is for you if you like female protagonists, characters with an agenda, and slower-paced (yet not too slow) adventures.

A promising first book in a new series.

Recommended.

“The snow is too bright and level for me to see anything clearly,” the barbarian growls. The sound of shuffling and mild cursing draws his attention to Nyx who has sunk up to her nose in snow. “What are you doing, fire sprite?”

Nyx shivers while squinting into the distance, her eyes coated in bronze energy. “The reason you can’t see anything might be because you’re too tall. I’m trying to see if there’s anything that breaks the level ground. My eyes are enhanced right now, but I don’t . . . wait a second . . . I think there’s something buried out there. A beast of some kind? It’s a very subtle up and down motion that reminds me of something breathing. It just stopped moving, but I don’t know what that means. I’ll lead the way.”

Not waiting for a response, Nyx pushes through the thick snow and uses wind magic to gradually shift the powder out of her path. She does her best to move quietly and avoid disturbing whatever they are approaching, but the crunch of frozen grass beneath her boots makes the half-elf cringe with every step. A violent sneeze threatens to erupt from her nose, stifled quickly by a silence spell around her nostrils. Rubbing at her cold legs, Nyx is thankful when Timoran puts a vest made of black fur over her. The Ifrit hair warms her body and drives away the looming cold that has been brewing in her chest for the last few minutes. With renewed energy, the channeler walks a little faster and adds a simple heat spell to the wind that is steadily clearing the path.

“Wow. Such a beautiful creature,” she whispers when she steps into a circular clearing that surrounds the dead beast.

The enormous snow tiger’s blue and black fur is thick, the hairs sparkling when touched by direct sunlight. It has long incisors of glistening white that jut out of its mouth due to their size and sharpness. A slender tail lies limp in the exposed grass and still twitches as the muscles continue to lose their tension. Powerful legs and massive paws are splayed on the ground, giving the body the appearance of having peacefully died in its sleep. The gaping wound in the gorgeous snow tiger’s side is the only sign of an attack, the surrounding fur matted with aromatic blood.

Timoran’s rage boils when he spots the three cubs that are mewling and pushing against their dead mother. Judging from their size and faint, black stripes, he assumes they are no older than three months. Rusty manacles are attached to their back legs, the chains running to a stake that has been driven into the muddy earth. Restraining his anger, the barbarian moves within reach of the animals and gently breaks the metal bindings that are bruising their ankles. Scared and confused, the cubs cower against the still warm corpse and hiss whenever one of the adventurers comes close. One of the snow tigers bravely charges at Timoran and bites his boot, proudly returning to the others when the towering figure moves away.

The Wizard in My Window by J. David Clarke

The_Wizard_in_my_windowMy rating:  5  of  5  stars

Plot
(by Goodreads)

When Timothy Collier finds a mark etched in his bedroom window that resembles a wizard with a pointy hat, his family concludes it’s just one more thing to replace in their big old house. But when a book with blank pages begins to display magical items, one by one they appear in the house. Soon chaos erupts and the Collier family is face to face with an ancient wizard’s greatest powers and deadliest enemies.

THE WIZARD IN MY WINDOW is a Young Adult fantasy adventure for the whole family.  It contains no adult content and was specifically written to be kid friendly but full of action and excitement.

My Opinion

The book introduces you to the Collier family. Their move to a new town, to their new home – a rather old house, is full of obstacles. When the children are shown their new rooms, Timothy immediately discovers a mark in his window. It looks like a wizard. Timothy finds an old book in the attic. At first its pages are blank – not for long… His older sister Nichole becomes his partner in hiding and applying the appearing magick. This plot is based on a great concept, taking me in, immediately.  I will not tell you more about the story than shown in the Goodreads plot description above. This would spoil the fun of reading this book yourself and/or buying it for your kids.

With this great young adult fantasy novel The Wizard in My Window, J. David Clarke provides us with a very entertaining story. Carlos Ruiz Zafón once stated something like this: ‘As an adult I wrote the adventure novels I would have appreciated as a kid’. This could very well have been J. David Clarke’s intention as well, as he wrote The Wizard in My Window. A good read for all readers who enjoy young adult urban fantasy novels in an everyday and sometimes quite different environment.

As you can see, I really enjoyed reading The Wizard in My Window. I am now looking forward to reading the third book in J. David Clarke’s 313 series.   🙂

Plot
(by Goodreads)

When sixteen-year-old Shiloh Trudell takes a summer job at Craven Manor, she discovers a ghost with an agenda. That’s where she meets the new town hottie, Trent Donovan, and immediately becomes enchanted by his charms.

With cryptic messages from a pesky wraith, Shiloh will finally begin to understand the mysterious significance of the strange mark branded on her wrist and decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice to protect the other teenagers in town…

My Opinion

As an avid adventures (fiction) reader I really liked the story’s evolution. Shiloh is a sixteen-year-old girl troubled by dark shadows and a mother who is incapable to show love. I could feel what she felt, I could understand her. She falls in love with a boy who has come back with his father to live in their old house. He does not believe in witchcraft, ghosts, ‘magick’. This is quite complicated for a young girl just developing her ‘magick’ abilities. I was unable to put my eReader down.  😉  All characters are very convincing and fit perfectly into the plot. Now I need to get the next book in the Spellbound series – I just need to know what is going to happen next.  🙂

Sherry Soule (http://sherrysoule.blogspot.com) convincingly shows us the paranormal world of a teenager.

A must read for all witchcraft adventure fans.

I am looking forward to reading further paranormal adventures by Sherry Soule.

My rating:  5  of  5  stars

Plot
(by Goodreads)

Alligators, witches and a spooky mansion aren’t your average neighbors unless you live at the edge of the Ornofree swamp in the backwater town of Hadleyville.  The town’s bad boy, Pete Riley, may only be twelve, but he’s up to his eyeballs in big trouble, and this time he isn’t the cause.  This time the trouble arrives when a legendary hundred-year-old mansion materializes next door and the Ornofree alligators declare war to save their swamp from bulldozers.  Things only get worse when Pete’s guardian aunt and several of her close friends vanish while trying to restore order using outdated witchcraft.  Now Pete must find the witches and stop the war.  He might stand a chance if his one friend, Weasel, sticks with him, but even then, they may not have what it takes.

My Opinion

As an experienced adventures (fiction) reader I truly liked the story’s decent evolution.  Pete and Weasel do seem familiar.  I had the feeling I could have met them anywhere.  They were both that real.  C. Lee McKenzie lets reality meet magic (‘magick’) and you cannot help but buy into this story.  I actually held my breath several times.  And I was unable to put my eReader down.  😉  All characters are very convincing and fit perfectly into the plot.

C. Lee McKenzie (http://cleemckenziebooks.com/) successfully shows us the world in Hadleyville through a 12-year-old’s eyes.

A must read for all adventure fans.

I am looking forward to reading further adventures by C. Lee McKenzie.
