In a way, we are magicians. We are alchemists, sorcerers and wizards. We are a very strange bunch. But there is great fun in being a wizard.

I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.

Don’t make music for some vast, unseen audience or market or ratings share or even for something as tangible as money. Though it’s crucial to make a living, that shouldn’t be your inspiration. Do it for yourself.

Which is your favourite quote by Billy Joel?  🙂

  1. #2 speaks to me. I just had a conversation with a cousin who said listening to her favorite music while undergoing chemotherapy really helped her heal faster and beat cancer. She’s convinced. The music would make her get up and dance around her kitchen and feel hopeful instead of sitting in a chair being depressed~ I think music can fit a mood, too, and establish it. I like to write to different music depending on the mood of the scene I’m writing, either classical or American Songbook or jazz. BTW, Joel is a hero of mine. He’s writing classical right now.

    • This is an excellent choice, Marni!
Listening to music helps relax, comforts, etc. I am glad that it helped your cousin beating cancer.
Billy Joel’s performance was amazing; being 67 does not stop him one bit.

  2. “In a way, we are magicians. We are alchemists, sorcerers and wizards. We are a very strange bunch. But there is great fun in being a wizard.” I liked this because it sounded like what we do as writers.

  3. I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music. (So true)

  4. One of the few who could write lyrics. Most of his songs are very good stories (Miami 2017, Goodnight Saigon, Scenes from an Italian restaurant, etc. List goes on and on.) And a fantastic pianist

      • Wow. I didn’t have the opportunity to see him then. His concert in November 2013 in Dublin (O2 Arena) was sold out too fast.
Old is one’s age +15 – therefore you are never old. 😉

      • Just one thing that I didn’t like. He did the same “bad” joke in both concerts. Standing on his piano. Making everyone believe he will make a somersault, drum roll included. And then just hoping down. Funny the first time. Less the second time. Thanks for the compliment will try to remember that when I crawl out of bed tomorrow morning 😉
